January is here! We are busy thinking of some goals and resolutions we can make in 1st grade. One I think we all agree on is to read more! I want to thank you all for your help during the holiday season. Your donations to our celebrations and the thoughtful cards, expressions and gifts were very much appreciated. I wish all of you a happy and healthy New Year.
One goal we have in school this time of year is for our students in 1st grade to work more independently and to make a greater effort to complete quality work. We’ve talked about in class what it means to ‘take pride’ in our work. Perfection is not the goal, but rather, doing our best is the motto. You can help reinforce this by checking over your child’s homework to see that it was done to your child’s best ability. Thanks for your continued support.
In Reading: Next week we will be starting a new unit: Getting to Know Characters! We will get to know our characters like we get to know our friends! As readers we’re thinking about:
In Math: We are studying fact families. We are asking what math facts are related. We are learning that if we know the fact: 4 + 5 = 9, we also know 3 other facts:
5 +4 =9, 9 -5 =4 and 9 - 4 =5.
In Science: Our new unit is SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS. We will also read about cold weather animals and seasonal changes during Winter in our Scholastic News!
In Social Studies: We will be learning about Martin Luther King Jr. We’re studying his dream & his peaceful effort for fair treatment for all people!
