WHAT ARE WE LEARNING ABOUT?
In Math we’re working on: Comparing Numbers. We have learned that when you compare 2-digit numbers, you look at the tens place first to determine which number is greater or less. If the tens place digit is the same in both numbers you must look at the ones place to determine which is greater or less. We are learning how to use the symbols: > (is greater than), < (is less than) and = (is equal to).
In Reading we are discovering how to “Be our own teacher!” Often as teachers and parents when children are stuck on a word in their text, we are quick to come to the rescue to tell them the tricky words or we are quick to tell our kids how to solve a tricky or new word. This month we’re going to work on building a sense of greater independence, asking our students to “be their own teacher” and use ALL the strategies they know to solve tricky words and understand stories. We will be reading both fiction and Non-fiction texts. Three important questions kids should always be asking themselves, when they make an attempt to read a new or tricky word is: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?
In Writing...
We are working persuasive/opinion writing. Children are learning how write their opinion and support it with reasons and examples! Please send in your child’s collection if you have not already. We are judging our favorite pieces in our own collection and writing opinions about which pieces rank the best in our collection and explain why.
In Science...we are using property words to describe solids and liquids.
Social Studies, We continue to study current events through Scholastic News for Kids.
Thanks for all the support and help you give our learning each day!
