Math:
We will begin our unit on SUBTRACTION. We are using math words like: subtract, minus, take-away, less, and the difference. We will subtraction word problems (number stories). We will continue talk about how we can draw a picture to help solve math problems, use counters or act it out. Symbols your child should know: - (minus) + (plus) = (is equal to)
Reading:
We are reading just right books! Some reading strategies we trying out are: paying attention to print, pointing to the words as we read, matching our voice to print, using the pictures for clues to solve tricky words, identifying sight words on pages, paying attention to patterns in stories to help us read each page, getting our mouth ready to read a word and always asking “Does what I just read make sense?” We are also practicing getting our minds ready before we read by: Looking at the cover, reading the title & author and doing “Picture walks”. We are learning how to talk about books with partners.
Word Work:
We are finishing up our review of all the consonant and short vowel sounds. We have started practicing trick words (words that can’t be sounded out to spell). We are also practicing “tapping out” sounds to spell and read words. We will memorize the digraph sounds: wh/th/ch/sh/ck. We will have our first spelling test on Friday, October 8th!
Writing:
Continuing work on stretching out the sounds that we hear as we write new words. We are learning that new writers usually have more to write when they write true stories about their lives. They zoom in on one small moment and tell more about that. We are making sure our stories have a Beginning, Middle and End. Writers add details to their drawings and writing. Writers also know that sentences must: start with a CAPITAL letter, they also have finger spaces between each word and sentences must end with punctuation. ( . ! ? )
